About this course

This submodule shows, demonstrates and engages you into flood zone mapping. The sub-module consists of lectures, introducing concepts of flood hazard mapping and flood zone mapping, and a lot of practical skills to turn terrain datasets into flood zone mapping with QGIS.

Learning objective

Students learn hands-on how a digital terrain model and a vector dataset of main streams can be used to make flood zoning maps for these main streams, and what the practical use of such a map is. You’ll be able to make a similar map project as shown in the screenshot above yourself!

Introduction about flood hazard mapping, and flood zoning mapping, different approaches and data needs

In-depth how with only terrain information, flood zone mapping can be done. A specific focus lies on the Heigh-Above-Nearest-Drain (HAND) method

Demonstration screencasts how to produce a flood zone map based on HAND in QGIS

Hands-on exercise. In this exercise, you will build your very own flood hazard map, for a catchment area in Dar es Salaam!
