Students learn how to establish a detailed 2-dimensional flood schematisation of a river section in Dar es Salaam within a Graphical User Interface, with the explicit idea that they can reproduce this for other (larger, more complex) river systems. They will be able to operate and understand the basic functionalities of the GUI to schematize and run a 2D schematized hydraulic model. This will be done for the Mbezi river, which is small enough to cover in this course without significant run time. They will also be able to prepare and run simulations with upstream and downstream boundary conditions, as well as local rainfall. After this module, students will have a 2D model prepared.
Data requirements:
DTM of Mbezi river and surroundings, streams burnt in (prepare this rather than do during training). Boundary conditions (if available).
Readings:
a set of youtube movies that show the schematization steps within the GUI.
Manual of software used
Required ex-ante skills:
QGIS basics (handling layers, importing, exporting layers from/to files, understanding of vector layer attributes). These can be acquired from module #
