Skills development
On 13th April 2021, more than 20 experts from four Tanzania universities; 1. Universities of Dar es Salaam, 2. Ardhi University, 3. Sokoine University of Agriculture, and 4. State University of Zanzibar attended training of the trainers for Flood mapping, modeling, and predictions. The training was provided by the Resilience Academy team as part of their training program to provide skills to university experts and university students. This training was aimed to provide skills to University experts especially those that are teaching similar courses. The training was conducted for four days using both online and physical methods.
The online method was using an e-learning platform called Digicampus which is used by Resilience Academy to develop and provide online training materials to all Resilience Academy. You can get an overview of the courses provided by Resilience Academy here
The physical method was used to allow a maximum of 11 people to participate in the training physically. The number was limited due to Covid-19 in order that all experts can follow safety and measures for COVID-19.
The training which took place for four (4) days, was prepared in cooperation with Resilience Academy local experts and the support from experts from the University of Turku and Deltares experts. The training provided skills by looking at the issue of flooding which has been one of the urban challenges in the past 20+ years in Dar es Salaam. As it was intensive training, a combination of lectures, quiz and practicals were provided during training.
Therefore, during this training participants acquired skills about principles of flood mapping strategies, flood zone mapping, the concept of hazard to flood impact, and the dynamic flood modeling in 2 dimensions. The training will help experts to use these skills to provide good teaching in their program that combines lectures, Quiz, and practicals. The e-learning materials will provide further online skills to the Local universities experts, local students, and local people at large.
